Tests For Balance

palliative care vs hospice

Vertigo or dizziness symptoms can dramatically affect your daily activities. You may find it difficult to carry out even basic tasks. Your doctor can refer you to tests that will help you determine the cause of the symptoms, and guide you towards finding relief.

You can consult an ear and equilibrium specialist if you have dizziness, vertigo, or spinning sensations. They will be able to diagnose the problem and provide treatment. Your consultant may recommend other tests, such as a swivel exam to check your inner ears, depending on the symptoms you are experiencing.

Equilibrium tests

The balance system can also be tested using a set of gentle tests. The tests should only last 30 minutes. They are not painful.

These tests require you to move your head quickly and watch a series moving dots displayed on a monitor. You may also be asked to sit in a certain position. They are noninvasive tests that will be administered either by an audiologist or a doctor with a specialization in the ear, nose and neck (otolaryngologist).

VNG testing

A videonystagmography (VN) balance evaluation is an assessment of the health of your inner ears and central motor functions. It can help your doctor or audiologist diagnose and treat your symptoms.

The balance lab can be found on the 4th floor of the Lakeland Medical Building. You can talk to your doctor about the balance lab and ask any questions you have regarding the tests, or any other aspect of your care.

Romberg test for functional performance assessment

The Romberg is used to measure your proprioceptive ability (positional sense) which helps to control movement and posture. It is part of an exam that examines the vestibular and visual systems.

This test provides your therapists with the necessary information to create a program for retraining balance. This can include physical therapy, medications or surgery.

Computerized Dynamic Posturography

This test requires you to stand on top of a moving platform. The platform is fitted with sensors that detect how much you change your position and how long it takes you to get back into a stable position. Your therapist can compare your responses to an average adult and a baseline in order to identify any changes.

A rotary chair test will also be used to examine your balance. This test will be done in a room with no light and you will have to get into different positions when the rotary-chair moves.

The balance range also includes evoked potential tests. These tests are used to test the brain's response to stimuli such as cold or hot water, sound and light. The tests are used to measure your nervous systems response time to stimuli. They will also allow your therapists to identify the problem or imbalance causing you balance issues.

What is the Healthcare Industry Value Chain (or Value Chain)?

All activities that are involved in providing healthcare services for patients make up the healthcare industry value chain. This includes the business processes within hospitals and clinics and the supply chains that connect them to other providers such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, insurance companies, manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors. The end result is a continuum of care that begins with diagnosis and ends with discharge.

The value chain consists of four major components.

  • Business Processes – These are the tasks that individuals perform throughout the delivery of health care. For example, a doctor may perform an exam and then prescribe medication. Every step must be done efficiently and accurately.
  • Supply Chains - All the organizations involved in making sure that the right supplies reach the right people at the right time. A hospital might have several suppliers. These could include lab testing facilities, imaging centres, pharmacies, or even janitorial personnel.
  • Networked organizations - These entities must communicate with each other in order to coordinate. Hospitals typically have many departments, each with its own set of offices and phone numbers. The central point will allow employees to get up-to-date information from any department.
  • Information Technology Systems (IT) - IT is essential in order for business processes to run smoothly. Without it things would quickly fall apart. IT is also a platform that allows for the integration of new technologies into the system. Doctors can connect to a secure network connection in order to integrate electronic medical records into their workflow.
